How the process could work

April 16, 2004

Officer James Turney has until April 26 to appeal his suspension with the Civil Service Commission.

A hearing officer then has about 30 days to schedule a hearing with Turney, his lawyer and the city attorney.

The hearing officer then has 30 days to make a decision to maintain, downgrade or upgrade the suspension.

Either Turney or the city can appeal that decision to the full commission within 45 days.

The commission then must decide whether to take the case. It can hold a hearing or base its decision on the information available.

The commission's decision can then be appealed to district court.
